History of UPCSI

The UP Chapter of the Cardiological Society of India was formed in the year 1993 under the dynamic leadership of Prof. Savitri Shrivastava, HOD Cardiology, Sanjay Gandhi PGIMS, Lucknow and Prof. Mansoor Hasan, Prof & Head, Cardiology, King George Medical College, Lucknow. Prof. Savitri Shrivastava was chosen as the first president and Dr. Nakul Sinha as Honorary secretary of UPCSI. Later on senior cardiologists of our state Prof. Mansoor Hasan, Prof. SS Singhal, Prof. VK Puri, Prof. RPS Bhardwaj, Prof RK Saran, Prof PC Saxena and Prof Praveen Kumar Jain served as subsequent presidents of UPCSI. The primary objective of the Society is to improve the basic understanding and scientific knowledge of all types of cardiovascular diseases, and promote not only their management but also ways and means to prevent them.

UPCSI has not only grown steadily over the years in numbers but also in stature. UPCSI has been the first branch of CSI to organize regular meetings aimed solely at prevention of heart disease. This has become a much awaited yearly meeting by all sections of physicians in UP. UPCSI members have served on the Executive Committee of national CSI while Prof RK Saran has been elected as vice president CSI for the year 2006-2008. Prof Nakul Sinha, SGPGI has been nominated as Convenor of National Interventional Council, Cardiological Society and has put the society on an “electronic” platform by designing and maintaining the website for entry and analysis of vascular interventional data all throughout the country.

UPCSI has been the proud organizer of National Annual Conference of CSI, 1995 with Prof VK Puri as the Organizing Secretary and National Interventional Council Meeting in 2005 with Dr Nakul Sinha as the Organizing Secretary. Both meetings have been a huge success.

UPCSI has also been the first branch to form a ‘Research Cell’ under the leadership of Prof VS Narain and Prof Nakul Sinha. This has been done with the primary purpose of conducting multicentric studies in UP & neighboring areas to study the cardiac problems peculiar to this region and population.

This UPCSI website has many new features including facilities for online registration, information for meeting and a whole section devoted solely to patient information. We plan to keep the members both busy and interested by posting interesting ECG’s, CXR, Echocardiograms etc on the website.

The CARDINEWS – 1st edition of the UPCSI newsletter has also been published and released in September 2007. This will aim to provide useful and relevant information about latest studies and guidelines.
